WATSONVILLE > Nurses at Watsonville Community Hospital allege their employer maintains illegal nurse-to-patient ratios as defined by California law, a practice they say endangers the welfare of patients. “I witness nurses working back-to-back and 16-hour shifts, ” said Roseann Farris, a critical care registered nurse at Watsonville Community Hospital. “In the Critical Care Unit where I work, the hospital’s core staffing requires that we have four nurses available for every shift; but there are times we have had only one or two.” —Ryan Masters / Santa Cruz Sentinel, 09/24/15 More »
Like many other contributors to St. Joseph Hospital, I received a letter recently from the president of St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. David O’Brien. The letter is purportedly a response to very specific claims that my union, the California Nurses Association (CNA), has made against St. Joseph Health in general and St. Joseph Hospital in particular. The letter Dr. O’Brien sent is disappointing and filled with generalizations, omissions and unnecessarily accusatory language directed at CNA. —James Ladika, Eureka Times-Standard, 09/14/15 More »

Once run by Catholic nuns, the organization is now a large business enterprise that has lost its “moral compass, ” the union charged in a report titled “Falling from Grace.” —Jennifer Huffman / Napa Valley Register, 08/20/15 More »
